My FreeNAS 7 Build!

Been a long time since I have made a post as a Merchant Seaman, I spend too much time on the ocean and not enough time at home.

This post is about a project that I have wanted to do for a long time; a couple of years ago in my limited experience in the world of computers and the Internet I read of this project and how efficient the server, Operating System is, damn near foolproof so it became a highly desired project of mine being the computer building fool I am.

Building a freeNAS 7 Server from old and new parts.

Old parts: AMD motherboard and K6-2 processor from and old compact 7360 desktop computer.
                 Sony IDE DVD burner used.
New parts: Case desktop directron.com $10.00.
Memory 2 chips 256mhz. = 512 MHz. the max that the motherboard can support $27.00.

4 Hatachi 500gig hard drives 2 from newegg.com and 2 from compusa.com's store here in
El Paso, TX.  $34.00 each $136.00 before shiping and taxes.
DiabloTek 350Watt ATX Power Supply $14.00 off the shelf, at the local compusa.com
                   store.
                   SATA 2/1Pata Controller/Raid card Roswell $12.00 newegg.com.

I want you to know that I was uncomfortable with the the information from the FreeNAS website as to the different things that you can do with this server and the different services thus I went to youtub.com and found several videos from different people. The most informative videos I found was uxwBill's http://www.youtube.com/user/uxwbill?feature=watch video's he had the best explanations of the different features, and the most detailed. The guy has a tremendous knowledge of computers and collects old ones has some 500 entertaining videos on Youtube. So if you are interested in building your own FreeNAS 7 the information found in the above link after a search of the site will net you great information.

There is a lot of information on FreeNAS on Youtube; this video is about the FreeNAS 7 Operating System, and the new FreeNAS 8 Operating System. "8" is a horse of a different color a software company was asked to take over the development of FreeNAS many improvements in some areas and a number of complaints that desired features and services are now lacking that were in 7.

Fortunately you can still go to http://www.freenas.org/ ; to download this link http://sourceforge.net/projects/freenas/files/FreeNAS-7-nightly/0.7.5.9496/FreeNAS-x64-LiveCD-0.7.5.9496.iso/download  if you want to use the older operating system. Personally I like 7 better, 8 promotes ZDF very heavily and 7 recommends not using it. Though I will say that it is one heck of a storage system. Developed by "Sun" many years ago, not used and nearly forgotten, if I understand things correctly.

End product is a very nice server using an old but perfectly good motherboard and processor keeping them out of a landfill.

Does this fill a need, not really as I built a "Windows Home Server" a couple of years ago; it backups all the computers in the house up to 10 currently 3 on line. But the question is what backs-up the server well I intend to make it the FreeNAS Server.

Below is the Video I made with the help of the "Rugrats" of the FreeNAS build.

Now I have to figure out how to post it to Youtube the next great project for this blogger.

Well as you see I was successfull in doing so.
